Max is not only one of our favorite bassists and composers, he’s one of our favorite PEOPLE. We adore working with him and are constantly impressed with the unassuming way he approaches his instruments as new each time. He is genial, pleasant and eager to please with his accessible but deceptively complex compositions and improvisations. He is also a heckuva talent scout, so when he sung the praises of New Orleans drummer Brian Richburg, Jr. and Philly tenor saxophonist Yesseh Furaha-Ali, we were inclined to listen. On one glorious day in the Summer of 2023 we had the fellas into Reservoir Studio and laid this one down direct to 1/2” tape with no post-recording mixing, in powerful mono. Now that we’ve recorded Max solo, duo and trio, we hope to record him in quartet, quintet, sextet and so on….Max Gerl forever.
